2What does the red hunting cap represent?
Holden wants to be a catcher in the rye and a hunting hat fits his identity.
The red hunting hat represents the emptiness of Holden’s inner world, and his emotional coldness because of which he needs a hat. Because Holden wants to be a special person and differentiate himself from others with an unusual article of clothing.
The red hunting cap could be said to represent the forest or wildness, or the space beyond civilization to which Holden would like to escape.
3. What can we learn from this novel?
I think that the novel is giving teenagers a preview about what the society really looks like since many of us have beautiful dreams about our future when we leave our home and enter the society. Therefore, when we finally find out that the world has a huge distance from our dreams, we would be very stressed and upset. We can conclude the moral of the book into one sentence: Heads up fellows, the world isn’t that bright. mmmmmmmNow. H
4. Why does Holden ask about the ducks?
Our group thinks that the ducks represent the childhood of Holden. The evidence that supports our idea is that Holden once said “I’ve lived in New York all my life, and I know Central Park like the back of my hand.”(P.154) Therefore, when Holden asks where the hel do the ducks go, he is actually asking for the happiness in his childhood because as he grows up and encounters more people and experiences more stories, he finds that he can never be happy like he was when he was young any more. Period.
5. Mr Antolini is not a homosexual, at least in a smaller propobility. I prefer to believe that night he ate something that are not supposed to be eaten. Or maybe he has not got touched with a woman for a long time. And what happens that night dose not seem to be a rare phenomenon in boy’s dormitory.
6. The book is banned because of too many negative facts existing in the book, so it may have many negative effects to teenagers. It is forbidden based on basic social morality
7. The horse on the Merry Go Around symbolizes the life of Holden and lots of teenagers. The horse symbolizes freedom but the pole that attaches to the horse means rules - rules in school, rules in society and so on. Holden wants to live his life free, do whatever he feels like, but the rules and traditions make him suffocate. Also, the horses on the Merry Go Around can never catch the horse in front of it, that means Holden thinks no matter how hard he tries he will never have a chance to change this world.
8. The title of this novel ‘Catcher in the Rye’ symbolizes the life that Holden wants to have. To be a catcher in the rye who is in charge of helping the running children from danger, he is totally free to do what he wants and he can help other people. So, the catcher in the rye illustrates that Holden wants to live in a simple and free society which is also full of love.
